The restore report

Restored, Skipped, Replaced and Failed: what each counter means, where the failed files are listed, and what to do about them.

Updated
On this page

A restore ends on its report, laid out like a backup's. It stays in Activity afterwards, under the Restores filter.

The result#

ResultMeaning
Completedevery file was restored, or left alone by the rule you chose
Completed with skipped filesmost files were restored; some could not be
Failednothing could be restored; the banner names the first reason
Stoppedyou stopped it: You stopped this restore. The files already restored stay where they are.

The four counters#

CounterMeaning
Restoredwritten to the target; each one matched its checksum
Skippeda file was already there and the rule said leave it: Never replace, or Replace only if the backup is newer when the backup's copy was not newer
Replaceda file was there and the backup's copy took its place
Failedthe file could not be restored

Where the failed files are#

The report's list, Failed (n), names every file that could not be restored, with its reason. Files the rule left alone are counted under Skipped but not listed.

ReasonWhat to do
Access denied where it goes (E-DEST-003)restore to another folder, or for a protected location use Settings ▸ Advanced ▸ Restart as administrator and restore again
Not enough space where it goes (E-DEST-002)free space, or restore to another drive
The file in its place is open in another programclose that program and restore again
Did not match its checksum: a wrong password or a damaged backup (E-SET-002)that copy is damaged; restore the file from another point in time
Could not be read from the backup (E-DEST-001)check the backup drive or share, then restore again

Restoring again with Replace only if the backup is newer brings back only what is missing: the files already restored are left alone.

When the whole restore stops#

  • The backup drive or share goes away. The restore stops at once with E-DEST-004 for a drive or E-DEST-001 for a share. The files already restored stay. Reconnect and start it again with Replace only if the backup is newer.
  • A wrong password. It is found before anything is written: Wrong password. Nothing was written. (E-ENC-001).
  • Nothing you ticked is in that point. None of the selected items are in this backup point. (E-SET-003). Pick another point, or search for the file in Find to see which backups hold it.

Buttons#

Open folder opens the folder the files were restored to. Export log saves the restore's full log as a text file. Restore more goes back to the same point with the same options, for the next batch.
