Moving a licence to another PC

A licence is a number of seats. Free one on the old PC, or from any other PC you are signed in on, and activate on the new one.

Home covers 3 PCs and Pro 5. A seat belongs to a PC until you free it. Freeing it takes one click: on the old PC, from any other PC where you are signed in, or from your account page on genie9.com.

Before you start#

Open Account: click your email (or Not signed in) at the bottom left of the window, then Account & licences. Licences on your account and Manage devices appear only when you are signed in. See Signing in, and what it is for.

See where the licence is#

On Account, under Licences on your account, click Manage devices on the licence. The dialog lists every PC it is activated on: the PC's name, its Windows, when it was last seen, and This PC beside the one you are using.

Move it#

  1. On the old PC, click Deactivate this PC at the top of Account (or Deactivate on its row under Manage devices). The seat is free straight away.
  2. On the new PC, install GBM AI, sign in on Account and click Activate on this PC on the licence, or type the key under Have a key instead? See Buying and activating a licence.

What the old PC does next depends on its trial:

  • If its trial is still running, it goes back to the trial. The message says Seat freed.
  • If its trial is over and its jobs fit Free (two at most, none using a paid feature), it runs on Free and they keep running as they are.
  • Otherwise it says This PC was deactivated. It now runs on Free, which keeps two jobs: choose which on the next screen. Your backups are untouched. and shows the decision screen, where you pick the two jobs to keep.

Jobs and backups are untouched in every case. To stop the old PC backing up at all, turn its jobs off or uninstall GBM AI there. See When the trial ends.

The old PC is dead or gone#

No access to it is needed.

  1. On any PC with GBM AI, sign in on Account.
  2. Under Licences on your account, click Manage devices.
  3. Click Deactivate on the old PC's row. Its name and Last seen tell you which one it is.

Or do it on the website: sign in on your account page on genie9.com, where each licence lists its PCs with Deactivate.

Reinstalling#

  • Reinstalling GBM AI on the same Windows: nothing to do. The uninstaller keeps the licence, and the PC reuses its seat.
  • A clean reinstall of Windows, or a new disk with a fresh Windows: Windows gives the PC a new identity, so GBM AI counts it as a new PC. Free the old entry under Manage devices first, then activate. If the licence is already on all its PCs, activating shows This licence is on all its PCs. (E-LIC-003).

A family PC#

A seat is per PC, not per Windows account. Three people who sign in to one PC use one seat.

The backups themselves#

The sets on your drives are not tied to a licence. They restore on any PC, in any edition, Free included. See Restoring backups made on another PC and Moving to a new PC.
